Ganglion Cyst Removal

Ganglion Cyst Removal

Ganglion cysts are noncancerous lumps that most commonly develop along the tendons or joints of your wrists or hands, sometimes in the ankles and feet. Ganglion cysts are typically round or oval and are filled with a thick jellylike fluid. They can be pea-sized, while larger ones can be around an inch in diameter. Ganglion cysts can be painful if they press on a nearby nerve and their location can sometimes interfere with joint movement. Occasionally a ganglion cyst may disappear for a period of time, only to return. The goal of the Ganglion Cyst removal surgery is to eliminate the cyst so that it does not return. The procedure involves the surgeon making a small incision in the skin just over the cyst. The cyst is then identified, and great care is taken to free it from surrounding tissues, such as blood vessels and nerves. Depending on the location of the cyst, this procedure takes 10-20 minutes to complete and is routinely performed under monitored anesthesia care. Follow-up care includes suture removal and assessment of the incision site approximately 7 days following the procedure.
