Discectomy / Minnimally Invasive Disc Decompression

Print Friendly

Discectomy is an outpatient procedure involving the surgical removal of herniated spinal disc material that presses on nerves or the spinal cord. Normally spinal discs are round and function as cushions between each vertebrae. Sometimes when a back injury occurs one or more of the discs begin to bulge (herniate) and press on surrounding nerve tissues. This can be very painful and sometimes even can reduce function to the areas of the body that the nerve serves. The discectomy procedure involves a skilled surgeon utilizing special instrumentation and is routinely performed under heavy sedation administered by a trained anesthetist.
